On one occassion, Blessed Angela of Foligno (a wife, mother and mystical writer who died in 1309) was asked why one should embrace poverty, suffering, and contempt, she replied ...
"One must know God and oneself ... From these [poverty, suffering and contempt], one begins to attain to knowledge of God ... Christ, the beloved always had, always loved, and always practiced poverty, suffering and contempt. Therefore, like Christ, the one who loves Him should always love, put into practice, and posess these three things."
