A Mother's Wisdom

“I was fired from a job when I was sixteen years old and was devastated.  My entire personal worth was laid waste.  My mother found me crying in my upstairs room.  I told her what happened.  She sat down on my bed and took me in her arms.  ‘Fired? Fired!’ she laughed.  ‘What the hell is that? Nothing.  Tomorrow you’ll go looking for another job.  That’s all.’ She dabbed at my tears with her handkerchief.  ‘Remember, you were looking for a job when you found the one you just lost.  So you’ll just be looking for a job one more time.’  She laughed at her wisdom and my youthful consternation.  ‘And think about it, if you ever get fired again, the boss won’t be getting a cherry.  You’ve been through it once and survived.’”  Maya Angelou, Wouldn’t Take Nothing from My Journey, Random House, 1993, p. 80.

The Homeless Living in Nursing Facilities

Beautiful choir practice last night for the grand opening of our new HQ and the homeless supplies warehouse on Friday, June 27th, 6pm Mass, dinner at 7pm. The music group is made up of the awesome team of Miguel Dorado Rubio as cantor, Catherine Delgado and Angelique Gabrielle Perez (the sopranos), Br. Joseph on piano and backup vocals and Orlando on congas/percussion. The band will be taking the same music in July/August and making a tour of it to the homeless living in area nursing facilities (photo - Julissa and Valerie, children of band members entertain Fr. John). Who do you know that would like to practice and join in the joy of serving? Next practice is in Ventura, next Thursday, 6pm. God is calling you - please say "yes" - your Mother will love it!
