Homeless Man, Homeless Woman

by
Stacy Dawson

I watched you walking all alone
Loaded down with your bags
You looked so worn out and miserable
You clothes were mere rags
Are all your earthly belongings
Contained in the bags you hold?
Do you have anywhere to live
Or shelter from the cold?
Your greying hair and beard are so oily
When were you last able to get clean?
People curse and spit at you
Why are people so mean?
You didn't choose to live this way
Life has dealt you a raw deal
I've spent some time on the streets
I understand somewhat how you feel
The ducks in the lagoon you gaze out over
Eat so much better than you
People feed them till they burst
But never spare a single thought for you.
